How TruTex fibers work

A great quality all-weather surface should simulate the feeling of a perfect grass field as closely as possible.

“TruTex fibers do for sand what grass roots do for soil”

arrow-down-a.png

When the Hoof-meets-Earth happens during each footfall, the fibers expand while the grains of sand become compressed — to provide a solid landing for the horse.

arrow-down-a.png

Then, when the horse lifts its hoof, as the springs relax to their previous position they re-suspend the individual grains of sand. This is the process which returns the footing to its previous, un-compacted and resilient “slightly springy” condition.

arrow-down-a.png

Without the footing fibers, when the footfall lands on the groomed arena, the  sand remains compacted after the horse lifts its hoof. This “sand only” arena footing must be constantly groomed (un-compacted and loosened) in order to make the first footfall land on “cushioned” footing. It could also have a tendency to shift too much, lacking stability and creating a track on the rail.

Check out this cross-section below of a mason sand blended with TruTex fibers – the fibers stabilize the sand and prevent it from just sliding off the shovel.

👓 If you look closely, you can see the strands of fibers within the sand. 👓

Naomi was super easy to talk to when we were getting consults about our indoor ring. The ordering process was incredibly easy, delivery was quick (we are located in Pennsylvania), and installation, while time consuming due to low number of helpers, went very smoothly. The final product is loved by everyone who comes to our facility. I am hoping in the future to order Dead Sea Magnesium from TruTex to eliminate my sprinkler system! We are so happy to have be introduced to Naomi and her company and have recommended them to everyone looking for quality fiber at the best price!

I was so excited about riding on our new footing today that I couldn’t sleep last night. I had pretty much resigned myself to the fact that great footing was just going to be something that we couldn’t afford. We tried this sand and that sand, researched different treatments for dust and stability. We called the big footing companies and the little footing companies, got all the samples of recycled rubber that we could find. Everything was out of our price range by thousands of dollars. Some quotes were so high they were just downright funny, like, seriously, people can afford that?

It’s been a few weeks since we installed our TruTex footing, so we thought it was time for an update. We’ve had rain, we’ve had no rain, we’ve had wind, and we’ve had our first frost, and the consensus is still that the addition of TruTex has made riding in our humble little ring “like riding on a cloud” as Alexa Paige puts it so nicely (has nothing at all to do with the fact that she’s riding Louis M 😜). But seriously, the TruTex has improved our footing in every way. The first day I rode on it I thought I had finally trained all of my horses to move better overnight, but alas it was the TruTex.

Love the footing for its stability in turns as well as general softness. Also, I barely have to water now!

Advantages of TruTex footing fibers

PRICE

TruTex arena fibers are an excellent quality product being offered at an extremely affordable price. Not only will you be saving money on the fibers but also on your sand.

TruTex is an additive that is designed to be able to blend with sand that can be found at your local quarries rather than needing expensive custom sands, saving you thousands of dollars in sand.

For example – TruTex fibers cost ONLY $2750 (plus tax & freight) to do a 66′ x 132′ arena. (small sized dressage arena)

PERFORMANCE

TruTex arena fibers provide the footing with more spring and cushion, whilst enhancing its stability and traction.

TruTex will make your horse feel more confident and capable of offering you his best performance without having to worry about inconsistencies in the surface.

Basically – Your horses will feel better, go better and make you look better!

It’s a Win-Win

MAINTENANCE

TruTex footing is designed to retain moisture within the fibers meaning your arena will stay dust free and have consistent performance with LESS frequent watering & grooming.

TruTex footing, like all other fiber footings, does require grooming with a compatible arena groomer. We can assist you in finding a suitable grooming option or give advice on your current arena groomer.

F.A.Q's

Our fibers are made from various strands of plastic polymer fibers. They are a bi-product from different types carpet fibers and similar items but are NOT a recycled product! This is important to note as recycled products are much more difficult to regulate EXACTLY what is going into them and maintain consistent quality standards.

We have to be able to ensure that every bale we ship meets strict health and safety and quality standards.

Our fibers do not contain any organic materials that are subject to naturally breaking down over time.

There is no exact answer to this question as there are so many factors that determine longevity, such as – how well the arena is maintained, the number of horses using the arena and tracking the footing out, if the arena is subject to severe weather conditions etc…

The better you keep the fibers blended into your sand, the longer they will last for. If you allow the arena to get bone dry for long periods of time, your fibers will be more likely to rise to the surface and would be more susceptible to being moved by the wind or tracked out of the arena for example.

Under fairly average conditions at a 10 horse training facility, you shouldn’t need to replenish the arena for several years. You are obviously going to loose some footing from general use over time so after a few years, it might be beneficial to add another bale to refresh your footing. You wouldn’t need to remove any footing first, you’re just replenishing what’s been tracked out etc over time…

A: Yes, TruTex fibers will transform your existing footing and work with all sand types.

A: No, TruTex fibers are designed to work with all sand types. That being said, to maximize overall stability we recommend starting with an angular to sub-angular type of sand, which can be sourced locally.

A fine mason sand works well or a stone sand for example.

A: Yes you can install the footing with the help of our installation guide and a few friends 🙂

You will need :
Manure spreader / or rake and more friends
Tractor
Roto tiller
Suitable groomer
Water

Even with a lower rate of fibers than the recommended amount, you will still notice some improvement in your riding surface. Just know that you will not get the best possible results with a lesser amount. You can always start with fewer fibers and then add more to supplement later if desired.

No Problem!

All delivery trucks will be equipped with a lift gate and the driver is able to unload the bales for you.

A : The fibers come in large, highly-compressed bales and are stacked on pallets for shipping.

We stack up to 3 bales per pallet.

A : With the right tools, most trainers get their installation done in less than a day.

If you get an early start, you can even be teaching lessons on it the same evening 😉

A : Yes, the fibers do need to be kept moist to work best.

As a general rule – whatever frequency you are watering your sand arena at the moment to keep it damp, you’ll be able to water about 50% less often after adding our fibers.

A: Yes, for two reasons.

  1. Because of the fibers’ superior ability to retain moisture, the footing will  remain moist for longer periods of time.
  2. Because the horse will work more on top of the surface rather than creating deep tracks in the surface like other types of footing, you’re simply disturbing fewer sand particles that would be kicked up and turn into dust.

A : Oh yes!! TruTex fibers are an excellent choice for both indoor and outdoor arenas.

A : Any surface that has a water content will freeze eventually, but it’s the water that is actually freezing, not the fibers.
We do find however, that the fibers seem to slow the rate of freezing a little and do make it easier to groom back to a rideable surface after a cold spell.

A : No. Since it is so straightforward to install, we simply offer the product for sale to make it more cost-effective for our customers.

A : A minimum starting depth of 3 inches is recommended for most disciplines but if you are doing higher level jumping, we suggest going up to 4″ for greater shock absorption and energy return.

A : Yes, the footing provides plenty of stability for horses playing. Be sure to clean up any manure to keep your footing in the best possible shape.

Why TruTex? Our Story

We formed Trutex for one reason; to make quality footing more affordable for horse owners and trainers wanting to provide the best for their horses. Like you, we have been there and had the painful reality of facing high footing cost and even higher specialized sand costs. We understand the consequences of working on poor footing and the need for a footing additive that will work with local sands, whilst not breaking the bank. We found the solution for our own arenas but we realized that there are many more equestrians out there that share our same needs and harsh realities, it made sense to share our opportunity with you and make an affordable footing solution for everyone. Click here to learn more about our journey and our vision for TruTex.
