How To Install Your Footing Fibers

With a few key tools, installation of your footing fibers is a straightforward process.
*IMPORTANT – This installation guide is assuming that you already have the appropriate amount of sand evenly installed onto a level base in your arena that does not hold water or have drainage issues.

Method 1 (recommended)

Required Tools

  • Tractor
  • Manure spreader
  • Rototiller (optional but makes the mixing process much quicker)
  • Ability to water arena
  • Suitable groomer
  • Wire cutters (wear safety goggles)

Step 1

Place the bales into the manure spreader (1 at a time) and carefully remove all packaging/wires.

Step 2

Drive the spreader around the arena to distribute the fibers. Try to spread as evenly as possible throughout the entire arena. (Make sure all packaging and wires have been removed prior to spreading)

Step 3

Water the arena until the fibers are noticeably wet. Do not oversaturate the sand and make it sloppy.

Step 4

Use the rototiller to mix the fibers into the top 3” of the sand. Be careful not to disturb the base.

Step 5

Use your groomer to continue mixing the fibers but to also compress and smooth the footing for a soft but stable finish. If you find that the fibers get caught up in the drag occasionally, you might want to raise the level bar until they are more mixed into the sand.

Method 2 - (the buddy system)

Required Tools

  • Tractor
  • Rakes and lots of friends
  • Ability to water arena
  • Suitable groomer
  • Wire cutters (wear safety goggles)

Step 1

Arrange bales in arena for most even distribution of fibers. Remove all packaging and wires.

Step 2

Break up the bales manually and use rakes to spread across the surface of the footing. Try to distribute as evenly as possible.

Step 3

Water the arena until the fibers are noticeably wet. Do not oversaturate the sand and make it sloppy.

Step 4

Use your groomer to very gradually mix the fibers into the sand starting close to the surface. You will need to watch the fibers closely as they will have a tendency to get balled up in the groomer until they get more properly into the sand. You will need to raise up the drag when you see this starting to happen and then lower it again afterwards. For this reason, you should only attempt to mix the fibers with a groomer using a tractor with a 3-point hitch that can raise and lower the drag quickly. This would not be possible with a groomer attached to a Gator or ATV for example.
